The Tregaron Conservancy has been awarded another Dorothea de Schweinitz Grant from the National Trust for Historic Preservation – this time for $4,000 to design a new entry to Tregaron Estate on the Macomb Street side.
Originally, Macomb Street was the service entrance to Tregaron. The Conservancy has the original 1927 landscaping plan drawn by Ellen Biddle Shipman for the street front property, but there is no evidence the plan was ever implemented.
The Board of Directors is interested in developing an attractive entryway to Tregaron. A plan will be developed, based on the original Shipman design and plant selection, but modified for deer resistance. New stone pillars topped by replica lanterns are being considered as part of the design.
Part of the landscape plan will include the development of a pathway for pedestrian visitors to Tregaron Estate. Since the Washington International School owns the buildings on the hilltop, there is considerable vehicular traffic during certain hours of the day. This new path would establish a safe access to the Tregaron Conservancy’s 13 acres of historic landscape.
The grant will also pay for researching an irrigation and lighting system for the area. Paying for the implementation of the beautifully rendered design will be one of the Conservancy’s next challenges.
