While the Tregaron Conservancy owns the undeveloped land at Tregaron Estate, the Washington International School (WIS) owns the historic mansion, greenhouse, gardener’s cottage, carriage house and dacha. As joint tenants, the Conservancy and WIS are serious stewards of the 20-acre historic estate. The two entities get along exceptionally well with regular communication and cooperation. WIS has three representatives on the Conservancy’s board of directors and is a very generous financial supporter of our restoration work. We are extremely lucky to share this historic property with such a good neighbor. Look for upcoming events co-hosted by the two groups. Ideas include Sunday musical salons in the mansion.
As WIS Head Clayton Lewis wrote recently: “The relationship between the Conservancy and the School is a remarkable story. Imagine a single estate that is to be divided between two separate non-profit organizations, one surrounding the other. The potential for discord was enormous. Fortunately, those involved in writing the covenants had great foresight, ensuring that the interests of all parties were protected. That strong sense of mutual benefit continues to predominate.”
