Planning Your Visit

Welcome to Tregaron (treh-GAIR-uhn)!

Our historic woodland park features trails, wild gardens, open fields, meadows, and a lily pond. We hope you will visit and return often. Note that our trails are mulched and some feature rustic stairways and stepping stones. Terrain may be uneven. Sturdy, closed-toed walking shoes are recommended.

Please note that the Conservancy does not have restrooms. The nearest restrooms are at Starbucks on Connecticut Avenue NW across from the National Zoo.

Hours

Tregaron is open every day from dawn to dusk, free of charge.

Location

Tregaron is located in Northwest Washington, DC between the Woodley Park and Cleveland Park neighborhoods, with two main entrances:

  • Macomb Street Entrance, 3100 Macomb Street, NW: gate/walkway located just east of the Washington International School (WIS) driveway, one long block west of Connecticut Avenue NW. Follow the path, turn left up the side of the driveway, and follow signs to the Conservancy’s trails.
  • Klingle Road Entrance, 3000 block Klingle Road, NW (GPS address: use 3031 Klingle Road NW, entrance is across the street): gate/stairway located just east of the intersection of Klingle and Woodley Roads NW.

Tregaron has two additional entrances from the Klingle Valley Trail, a pedestrian/bike path. Bikes are not allowed at Tregaron. Bike racks are located near both entrances to Tregaron from the Trail.

The Washington International School maintains a campus adjacent to the Conservancy, at the Estate’s hilltop, that is closed to the public. There is no fence between the Conservancy and School property; please observe the School’s posted signs. Dogs must be on leash at the Conservancy and are not permitted on School property.

Public Transportation and Parking

Tregaron is located near the Cleveland Park Metro Station. It is convenient to Metro bus routes via Connecticut Avenue and Woodley Road NW. No parking is permitted for Conservancy visitors on the WIS driveway. Two-hour parking is available on nearby streets. Two-hour parking restrictions do not apply to vehicles displaying Zone 3 parking permits.

Park Rules

To ensure that everyone may enjoy their visit, Tregaron Conservancy requires visitors to observe these rules:

  • Pedestrians and leashed dogs that are under owner control are welcome to enjoy the park. Strollers are welcomed. Bikes, scooters, skateboards, motor vehicles, and horses are not permitted. All efforts must be made to avoid negatively impacting the Conservancy land or other visitors during your visit.
  • Please “leave no trace” and clean up after your pet. Dispose of all waste in our trash and recycling cans near the Klingle Road Entrance. Please take your trash/recycling out with you if you visit with a group. (Permission is required for large-group visits.)
  • There is an inherent risk in any outdoor recreational activity. The Conservancy has uneven paths, bridges, culverts, waterways, low branches, and other potential hazards. Please be alert to weather forecasts when you visit. Visitors use the park at their own risk.
  • Our landscape is fragile and we work hard to steward and maintain it. Sections of the Conservancy land may need to be closed or roped off from time to time to protect them.
  • Please be gentle on the land when you visit. Do not remove or attach anything to any tree or other vegetation. Do not walk through garden beds or planted meadow areas. Walk only on turf and marked trails/footpaths and do not create new trails. Our trail system is based on our historic plans, and “shortcutting” new trails is not allowed. It destroys vegetation, spreads damaging non-native plants, and causes erosion.
  • Please observe your children as they explore. Please refrain from damaging trees and plants. Do not touch or remove any wildlife or plants from the pond or throw anything into the pond.
  • Smoking, grills, candles or other open fires are not permitted.
  • Camping is not permitted.
  • Drones and aerial photography are not permitted.
  • Firearms and hunting are not permitted.
  • Gardening work may only be performed by authorized Conservancy volunteers. Please do not move or remove any plants.

Events, Photography, Videography or Other Commercial Use of the Conservancy

  • Advance written approval is required from the Conservancy to reserve a specific area of the park, to use the Conservancy for school, camp, or after-school groups, or to use the Conservancy (including information on our website and social media) for any commercial purpose.
  • Photography and videography for any commercial purpose — including individual or group shots by professional photographers for personal or family use — is only permitted with advance written approval from the Conservancy.

If you have questions or would like to request a permit to reserve event space, bring a school, camp or after-school group, or to perform professional or commercial photography/videography at Tregaron, or engage in any other commercial activities at the Conservancy or using Conservancy materials, email info@tregaronconservancy.org.

Thank you for observing our rules and enjoy your visit to the Tregaron Conservancy!

Tai Chi with David Harold- Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays & Fridays

Free

Weekly Tai Chi Practice led by David Harold on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays from 9-10 a.m. The group will gather west of the Lily Pond (or in the nearby Twin Oak meadow if the Conservancy is hosting another event). The nearest entrance is 3031 Klingle Road NW.

Note: The program will only be canceled in the even of heavy rain, high winds, or thunderstorms, or if David is unavalible. Cancellations will be posted on the pop-up notice on the website home page.

No registration is necessary, but participants will be required to sign our standard release form at the start of the session.

David Harold has been practicing Taiji and Qigong for over 40 years for much of that time. He has studied both in Yang and Chen styles. He is retired from a career in psychotherapy and human services management.

David is passionate about making Taiji and Qigong practice and principles accessible. For 15 years, he led a free, weekly public outdoor practice in Winston-Salem, NC. That practice continues to be led by his students now that he has moved to DC. David is now particularly interested in using Taiji principles to build embodied peacemaking.
